Club Safety Requirements

These Safety Regulations are minimum requirements for all BBYC Club Members Boats as from 1 July 1997. All joining members vessels will be inspected as part of membership acceptance prior to application being forwarded to The Board of Management Meetings.

It is strongly recommended that all keelboats and trailer yachts are brought to Cat 4 and Cat B respectively. These are listed in the YNZ Rule Book 2001-2005 available from the office and cover safety regulations in much greater depth (pages 138-214).

While racing, yachts are required to meet the Safety Categories specified in the Event Notice of Race and/or Sailing Instructions.

Requirements for Launches and Trailered Runabouts are:
  • Navigation lights to Prevention of Collision at Sea Regulation Standard Lifebuoy
  • One approved life jacket per crew member
  • Adequate anchor, warp and chain
  • Bilge pump or buckets
  • Distress signals (That are more than three years old or of which the date of expiry has passed are not acceptable)
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Flash Light
  • Compass and local charts
  • Name numbers on hull, min. height 50mm, 100mm recommended
  • Radio Receiver recommended

It is also recommended that all trailered runabouts have alternative means of propulsion.

Please phone one of the following Safety Inspectors to make an appointment for your boat to be inspected. They will also be happy to answer any queries prior to inspection.

Ron Evans: phone NZ 09 534 6059 or 021 214 8024
