Youth Match Racing Nationals

Hayden Cockburn, Ash Hammond and Micheal Rodgers have been selected to represent the BBYC at the 2008 Youth Match Racing Nationals.
The Youth Match Racing Nationals are an under 21 event held in Wellington from the 28th to the 31st of August. The regatta is sailed on RPNYC fleet of four Elliot 6 meter boats, 8 teams will compete in the event.
This will be the first time BBYC has been represented at the event; the team will face some tough competition, including local favorite, 'University World Match Racing' champion Josh Junior, as well as two strong experienced teams from the RNZYS.
The team has been training three times a week on the RNZYS Elliots and the BBYC J24s. Hayden (18) and Micheal (17) were part of the successful Macleans School team that finished 3rd in the National Championship, Ash (19) was coaching the team.
The team sailed their first match racing event ‘Bucks Match Race 3’ earlier in the year, they finished a creditable 6th in a tough field beating seasoned match racer and past NZ women’s national champion Jess Smyth.
The goal for the team is to make the semi finals, and get the most experience of the regatta as possible. They will be one of the youngest and least experienced teams at the event, so the learning curve will be steep.

Over the weekend Bucklands Beach Yacht club held the 'Bucks Match Race 4' an ISAF grade 4 match racing event. Seven teams lined up to race in the clubs five J24 keelboats.
Near perfect weather over the weekend and the high standard of the teams at the event provided close exciting racing. After the first round robin Michael Thorpe was leading on 5 wins 1 loss, in 2nd was Jonathan Rankine, Phil Robertson and Laurie Jury all on 4 wins 2 losses. Just missing out on the top 4 semi finals was laser sailor Michael Bullot who was competing in his first Match Racing event.
Thorpe chose to race Rankine in the semi final, this may have proved a mistake as Rankine stepped up his game and sailed through the semi final 2-0 then also defeated Phil Robertson in the final 2-0.
