The Bucklands Beach Yacht Club plays host to a number of larger keelboat regatta's for those more competitively minded.
Held in March, the Auckland Keelboat Regatta is one of the highlights of the sailing year, not only in the City of Sails, but the whole of New Zealand. A joint initiative between Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, it features two days of racing which includes windward-leeward sprints and longer harbour courses.
The regatta incorporates a range of sailing divisions including:
• A, B, C Divisions - Open divisions based on PHRF and IRC Handicap's
• Open Multihull Division (and Class Championships)
• 8.5 Multihull Division (and Class Championships)
• Farr MRX Pacific Keelboat Challenge
• Passage Division (spinnaker)
• Sport Boat
The event was designed by sailors, for sailors, and it shows. Having only been staged for the first time in 2008, it has quickly grown into Auckland’s ultimate regatta with the nation’s top sailors and some international sailors taking part.
The social side of the regatta is equally important, with a party on the Saturday night and a prizegiving at the conclusion of the event on the Sunday. More information can be found on the official event website, www.aucklandregatta.co.nz, which also hosts official documents such as the Notice of Race. It is also possible to enter the event online.
Corinthian racing at its finest, the Young 88's are New Zealands premier one design keelboat class, and this regatta is a favourite for the fleet. This is an owner driver competition. Racing is followed by an off the water debrief over a few Rums at BBYC to share learnings from the North Sails experts and tell the usual stories!
The addition of a Restricted division - a more relaxed approach is a fantastic introduction to the 88 Fleet. No spinnakers takes the stress off the crews and the owners giving great racing and coaching opportunities from the team at North Sails.
Run over a weekend with divisions for both Open and Restricted this regatta is one to watch.
Sailed at the home of the Townson fleet - this regatta includes the Townson 32 Championships as well as the wider Open Townson fleet for any boat penned by Des Townson. A fantastic regatta and one to enjoy.
